Recently Jennifer Cullen, CEO of Synapse, was invited to be interviewed and filmed by Melbourne-based film production company “Grit Media”.
Jennifer was asked to comment about Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and how it is impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities in Queensland. She also had a chance to talk about Synapse’s activity and current issues such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
This filming opportunity came about through an invitation from Damian Griffis, the Executive Officer of the Aboriginal Disability Network who is based out of Sydney. Jennifer’s interview will be incorporated into footage that will be made into a production that will be aired on Channel 31 (Melbourne's community television consortium known for specialised broadcasting).
It is Grit Media’s intention to use the footage for a longer documentary they plan to pitch to ABC Television and SBS Television next year as an edited documentary concerning Indigenous people living with disabilities.
Grit Media began in 2004 with a popular community television program called No Limits, which has since gone on to win many Community Broadcasting Awards. Since then they have expanded into radio, documentary, web and training initiatives for their members. They have also worked in partnership with a number of organisations to produce publicity material, training DVDs and event coverage.
Grit Media is dedicated to the training and empowerment of people with disabilities. Their aim to influence the wider media industry by taking on what they feel is “a culture of harmful misconception and ignorance”. By producing content that is straight from the perspective of people with disabilities Grit Media believe that they can show a real and positive representation of people’s experiences and perspectives.
